Who is Vulnerable?
Vulnerability Description The Server Service (SRVSVC) is one of the network services supplied by Microsoft. It supports file, print, and named-pipe sharing over Windows-based networks, and allows named pipe communication between applications running on distributed systems. By supplying malformed parameters to some of the API functions offered by this service, an attacker may cause a buffer overflow, and use it to take complete control over the affected system.

Protection Overview

This protection will block MS-RPC SRVSVC requests that contain malformed parameters.The detect mode makes it possible to track unauthorized access attempts without blocking them.

In order for the protection to be activated, update your Security Gateway product to the latest IPS update. For information on how to update IPS, go to SBP-2006-05, click on Protection tab and select the version of your choice.

Security Gateway R80 / R77 / R75 / R71 / R70 / R65

  1. In the IPS tab, click Protections and find the Microsoft Windows Server Service RPC Request Buffer Overrun (MS06-040) protection using the Search tool and Edit the protection's settings.
  2. Install policy on all Security Gateways.

This protection's log will contain the following information:
