Vulnerability Description | The Microsoft Windows graphics device interface (GDI) enables applications to use graphics and formatted text on the video display and on the printer.WMF and EMF are image formats used in many Windows programs including Internet Explorer and Outlook. A remote code execution vulnerability has been reported in the way Microsoft GDI handles malformed WMF and EMF files.The vulnerability is due to a buffer overflow error when Microsoft GDI fails to properly process malformed WMF and EMF image files.By convincing a user to open a specially crafted image file, a remote attacker could cause a denial of service condition or execute arbitrary code on an affected system. |
This protection will detect and block the transferring of malformed WMF and EMF files over HTTP.
In order for the protection to be activated, update your Security Gateway product to the latest IPS update. For information on how to update IPS, go to SBP-2006-05, click on Protection tab and select the version of your choice.
