Who is Vulnerable?
Vulnerability Description Microsoft Word is a popular word processing software. A remote code execution vulnerability has been identified in Microsoft Word. A remote attacker could exploit this issue via a malformed Word file. The vulnerability is due to a memory calculation error in Microsoft Word that fails to properly handle specially Word files that includes a malformed CSS value. A remote attacker could trigger this flaw by convincing a victim to open a specially crafted Word file. Successful exploitation of this issue may corrupt system memory allowing execution of arbitrary code on a vulnerable system.

Protection Overview

This protection will detect and block the transferring of malformed Word files over HTTP.Please note that the protection offered in this advisory may block access to legitimate internet sites that were created via older and less secure techniques.

In order for the protection to be activated, update your Security Gateway product to the latest IPS update. For information on how to update IPS, go to SBP-2006-05, click on Protection tab and select the version of your choice.

Security Gateway R80 / R77 / R75 / R71 / R70 / R65

  1. In the IPS tab, click Protections and find the Microsoft Word Cascading Style Sheet Processing Code Execution (MS08-026) protection using the Search tool and Edit the protection's settings.
  2. Install policy on all Security Gateways.
