Who is Vulnerable?
Vulnerability Description Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) is an application layer protocol that is part of the Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) protocol suite. SNMP allows administrators to remotely manage network devices made by many different vendors, including servers, workstations, routers, firewalls, and so forth. The SNMP Service allows the local computer to service incoming SNMP requests. SNMP version 3 is the standard version of SNMP since 2004. An authentication bypass vulnerability was reported in multiple implementations of the SNMPv3 protocol. The vulnerability is due to a failure to properly handle HMAC in an authentication message. A remote attacker can exploit this issue by sending a specially crafted SNMPv3 authentication request to a vulnerable system. Successful exploitation may allow the attacker to gain access to a target system.

Protection Overview

This protection will detect and block malformed SNMPv3 messages.

In order for the protection to be activated, update your Security Gateway product to the latest IPS update. For information on how to update IPS, go to SBP-2006-05, click on Protection tab and select the version of your choice.

  1. In the IPS tab, click Protections and find the Multiple Vendor SNMPv3 HMAC Handling Authentication Bypass protection using the Search tool and Edit the protection's settings.
  2. Install policy on all Security Gateways.
