Who is Vulnerable?
Vulnerability Description The Microsoft Exchange Server is an implementation of an email server capable of handling numerous Internet protocol, including the Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP). A security vulnerability exists in the Internet Mail Service in Exchange Server 5.5 and Exchange 2000 that could allow an unauthenticated attacker to connect to the SMTP port on an Exchange server and issue a specially-crafted extended verb request. In an attack case where code injection was not successful, a Denial of Service condition can be created by terminating the Internet Mail Service or by exhausting the memory consumption of the application. In an attack case where code injection was successful, the attacker could execute malicious code in the security context of the SMTP service.

Protection Overview

This protection will detect and block attempts to exploit this vulnerability.

In order for the protection to be activated, update your Security Gateway product to the latest IPS update. For information on how to update IPS, go to SBP-2006-05, click on Protection tab and select the version of your choice.

Security Gateway R80 / R77 / R75

  1. In the IPS tab, click Protections and find the Microsoft Exchange Server XEXCH50 Command Buffer Overflow (MS03-046) protection using the Search tool and Edit the protection's settings.
  2. Install policy on all Security Gateways.
