Who is Vulnerable? | |
Vulnerability Description | Metadata is a general term for data which is used to describe characteristics of data. It is generally used to provide information such as title, author, modification history, as well as any other relevant characteristics. In Microsoft implementations there are two common approaches to storing file metadata, incorporating it into the file descriptor or incorporating it directly into the file. A vulnerability exists in the Microsoft Windows Explorer Web View component. The flaw is created by insufficient validation of user-supplied Author field value of the file summary information. This vulnerability may be leveraged by a malicious user to execute arbitrary code on an affected target host. A successful attack will result in arbitrary code execution. The script embedded in the malicious file will be inserted into the HTML page produced by Web View upon cursor focus being placed on the file. The timing of the script execution will depend on the attack approach. In some of those approches, the script will be executed immediately. In others, additional action from the user maybe required. There are attack approaches where the user will be required to move the mouse over the displayed email link for an exploit to execute. The behaviour of the target, resulting from the execution of the embedded code is entirely dependent on the intention of the code. |
