Who is Vulnerable? | |
Vulnerability Description | Gaim is a multi-protocol, multi-platform instant messaging client. The product supports numerous protocols such as AIM and ICQ, MSN, Yahoo!, and IRC. Gaim allows one user to log into multiple accounts on multiple IM networks simultaneously. The AIM/ICQ protocol is a TCP based instant message protocol. The client and the server communicate through the port 5190/TCP. A heap buffer overflow vulnerability exists in the Gaim instant messaging client. The vulnerability is created by the improper handling of Away messages in the AIM and ICQ protocols. The exploitation of this vulnerability may allow malicious users to inject and execute arbitrary code on a target host with the privileges of the current logged in user. In a simple attack case aimed at creating a denial of service condition, the affected product will terminate. In a more sophisticated attack scenario, where the malicious user is successful in injecting and executing supplied code, the behaviour of the system is dependent on the nature the injected code. Any code injected into the vulnerable component would execute in the security context of logged in user. |
