Who is Vulnerable? | |
Vulnerability Description | The Symantec VERITAS NetBackup server product suite is an enterprise backup system solution available for various platforms. It is capable of performing scheduled automatic backups as well as manual backups invoked by a client. A minimal backup environment consists of backup agents and a master backup server. The backup server serves as a single management tool that helps to consolidate all backup and recovery operations. There exists a buffer overflow vulnerability in the Symantec VERITAS NetBackup product line. The vulnerability is a result of the lack of boundary checks during the processing of certain messages to the vnetd service. An attacker may leverage this vulnerability to inject and execute arbitrary code on the target host with system level privileges. The affected process on the target host will be terminated after an unsuccessful attack attempt. Due to the fact that the process is spawned by a separate daemon process, the functionality of the server will not be affected by this occurrence. As such, subsequent connections to the affected port will still be accepted and processed. In a successful attack attempt, the attacker will be successful in diverting the flow of the process to injected code. This will result in attacker supplied code being executed within the security context of the affected process. The behaviour of the host system will be dependent on the intention of the malicious code. The spawning nature of the daemon, allows recurring attacks on a single target. |
