Who is Vulnerable? | |
Vulnerability Description | Microsoft Internet Explorer allows HTML documents to embed ActiveX controls for the authoring of dynamic web content. ActiveX controls are based on Component Object Model (COM) technology. The invocation of an ActiveX control is performed by Internet Explorer by internally instantiating a COM object. There exists a vulnerability in the way Microsoft Internet Explorer instantiates the DirectAnimation.DATuple COM objects. When an instantiation of such a COM object is attempted by Internet Explorer, the application memory can be corrupted. Successful exploitation of this vulnerability can allow for arbitrary code execution within the security context of the currently logged in user. In an attack case where code injection is not successful, the affected application will terminate abnormally. In a more sophisticated attack where code injection is successful, the behaviour of the target host is entirely dependent on the intended function of the injected code. The code in such a case would execute within the security context of the current user. |
This protection will detect and block attempts to use the vulnerable COM object as an ActiveX.
In order for the protection to be activated, update your Security Gateway product to the latest IPS update. For information on how to update IPS, go to SBP-2006-05, click on Protection tab and select the version of your choice.
