Who is Vulnerable? | |
Vulnerability Description | The Ipswitch IMail Server is a mail server product geared towards medium to large size organizations. It contains implementations of POP3, IMAP4, and SMTP servers. The SMTP server module is installed and started in a default installation. There exists a vulnerability in the SMTP module of the Ipswitch IMail server. The vulnerability is due to insufficient sanitization of command arguments supplied to the service, which may lead to a buffer overflow condition. An unauthenticated attacker can exploit this flaw by sending crafted commands to the target server, thereby injecting and executing arbitrary code with the privileges of the server. In a simple attack case aimed at creating a denial of service condition, the affected process will terminate. Only the functionality of the SMTP service will be affected by this condition. If the IMail SMTP service is not configured to restart automatically, the services will be unavailable until the process is restarted manually. In a sophisticated attack scenario where the attacker is successful in injecting and executing supplied code, the behaviour of the system is dependent on the nature the injected code. Any code injected into the vulnerable component would execute in the security context of the service process, normally System. |
