Who is Vulnerable?
Vulnerability Description Computer Associates (CA) BrightStor ARCserve Backup and Business Protection Suite families of software products offer data protection for distributed servers, clients, databases and applications. They provide centralized control over a series of distribution operations including Backup and Restore, Data Migration and Threat Management. A buffer overflow vulnerability has been reported in the Message Engine of multiple products developed by Computer Associates. The vulnerability is due to the failure of the application in handling certain types of RPC requests. An unauthenticated remote attacker may use this flaw to cause denial of service or inject and execute code on the the vulnerable system with System level privileges. In an attack case where code injection is not successful, the affected service will terminate upon processing of the malicious message. If the service is not configured to restart automatically, the services will be unavailable until the process is restarted manually. The service will also launch the process AsAlert.exe, presumably to generate an internal alert or to write the error to a log file. In a more sophisticated attack, where code injection is successful, the behaviour of the target is entirely dependent on the intended function of the injected code. The code in such a case would execute within the security context of the service process. On Windows systems, the affected service is running with System privileges, by default configuration.
