Who is Vulnerable?
Vulnerability Description The Common Unix Printing System (CUPS) is a modular printing system for Unix-like operating systems that allows a computer to act as a print server. A computer running CUPS is a host that can accept print jobs from client computers, process them, and send them to the appropriate printer. There exists a memory corruption vulnerability in Apple's Common Unix Printing System (CUPS) distributed by multiple vendors. The vulnerability is due to a boundary error when handling Hewlett-Packard Graphics Language (HPGL) data. A remote attacker can exploit this vulnerability to inject and execute arbitrary code with privileges of CUPS service, normally lp. In an attack case where code injection is not successful, the affected application will terminate abnormally. In a more sophisticated attack case where code injection is successful, the behaviour of the target is entirely dependent on the intended function of the injected code. The code in such a case would execute within the security context of the affected service, with the privileges of the printer user, normally lp.
