Who is Vulnerable?
Vulnerability Description The ntpd daemon implements the Network Time Protocol (NTP) which sets and maintains the system time-of-day in synchronism with Internet standard time servers.A buffer overflow vulnerability has been reported in the ntpd (NTP daemon). The vulnerability is due to a boundary error in the ntpd when processing crafted packets sent to the daemon. A remote attacker may exploit this flaw to execute arbitrary code via specially crafted packet. Successful exploitation will terminate the affected service and may allow execution of arbitrary code on the vulnerable system.

Protection Overview

This protection will detect and block malformed packets sent to the NTP deamon.

In order for the protection to be activated, update your Security Gateway product to the latest IPS update. For information on how to update IPS, go to SBP-2006-05, click on Protection tab and select the version of your choice.

Security Gateway R80 / R77 / R75 / R71 / R70

  1. In the IPS tab, click Protections and find the NTP Daemon Autokey Stack Buffer Overflow protection using the Search tool and Edit the protection's settings.
  2. Install policy on all Security Gateways.

This protection's log will contain the following information:
