Who is Vulnerable?
Vulnerability Description Microsoft Excel is a popular spreadsheet application. A remote code execution vulnerability has been identified in the Microsoft Excel. The flaw is due to a memory corruption error in Microsoft Excel when loading specially crafted Excel files that include a malformed record object. The vulnerability occurs in the parsing of a malformed QSir and QSif records. A remote attacker could trigger this flaw by convincing a victim to open a malformed Excel spreadsheet file. Successful exploitation of this issue may allow the attacker to take complete control of an affected system.

Protection Overview

This protection will detect and block the transferring of malformed Excel files over HTTP.

In order for the protection to be activated, update your Security Gateway product to the latest IPS update. For information on how to update IPS, go to SBP-2006-05, click on Protection tab and select the version of your choice.

Security Gateway R80 / R77 / R75 / R71 / R70

  1. In the IPS tab, click Protections and find the Microsoft Excel QSir and QSif Records Pointer Corruption (MS09-021) protection using the Search tool and Edit the protection's settings.
  2. Install policy on all Security Gateways.

This protection's log will contain the following information:
