Who is Vulnerable?
Vulnerability Description The Windows kernel is the core of the operating system. It provides system level services, allocates processor time to processes, and manages error handling. An elevation of privilege vulnerability has been discovered in the Windows kernel. The vulnerability is due to an error in the Windows kernel that fails to properly validate certain data passed from user mode. A remote attacker may trigger this issue by convincing a user to open a specially crafted PE file. By persuading a user to open a specially crafted PE file, an attacker could take complete control of an affected system.

Protection Overview

This protection will detect and block the transferring of malformed Windows executable (PE) files over HTTP.

In order for the protection to be activated, update your Security Gateway product to the latest IPS update. For information on how to update IPS, go to SBP-2006-05, click on Protection tab and select the version of your choice.

Security Gateway R80 / R77 / R75 / R71 / R70 / R65

  1. In the IPS tab, click Protections and find the Microsoft Windows Kernel NULL Pointer Dereferencing (MS09-058) protection using the Search tool and Edit the protection's settings.
  2. Install policy on all Security Gateways.

This protection's log will contain the following information:
