Who is Vulnerable?
Vulnerability Description BMP is an image file format used to store bitmap digital images. A buffer overflow vulnerability has been discovered in Adobe Reader and Acrobat. The vulnerability is due to the way that Adobe Reader and Acrobat handle malformed BMP files. A remote attacker may trigger this issue by convincing a user to open a specially crafted BMP image file. Successful exploitation will create a denial of service condition, causing the application to become non-responsive, and may allow execution of arbitrary code.

Protection Overview

This protection will detect and block attempts to transfer malformed BMP files over HTTP.

In order for the protection to be activated, update your Security Gateway product to the latest IPS update. For information on how to update IPS, go to SBP-2006-05, click on Protection tab and select the version of your choice.

Security Gateway R80 / R77 / R75 / R71 / R70

  1. In the IPS tab, click Protections and find the BMP Image Improper Dimensions protection using the Search tool and Edit the protection's settings.
  2. Install policy on all Security Gateways.

This protection's log will contain the following information:

Attack Name:  Content Protection Violation.
Attack Information:  BMP image improper dimensions
