Who is Vulnerable?
Vulnerability Description Sendmail is a general purpose internetwork email routing facility that supports many kinds of mail-transfer and mail-delivery methods, including the Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) used for email transport over the Internet. There exists a buffer overflow vulnerability in Sendmail 5.79 to 8.12.7 which allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via certain formatted address fields, related to sender and recipient header comments as processed by the application. Successful attackers may exploit this vulnerability to execute arbitrary code under root privileges.

This protection will detect and block attempts to exploit this vulnerability.

In order for the protection to be activated, update your Security Gateway product to the latest IPS update. For information on how to update IPS, go to SBP-2006-05, click on Protection tab and select the version of your choice.

Security Gateway R80 / R77 / R75 / R71 / R70

  1. In the IPS tab, click Protections and find the Sendmail Header Processing Buffer Overflow protection using the Search tool and Edit the protection's settings.
  2. Install policy on all Security Gateways.

This protection's log will contain the following information:

Attack Name:  SMTP Protection Violation.
Attack Information:  Sendmail header processing buffer overflow
