Who is Vulnerable?
Vulnerability Description The VERITAS Storage Exec and StorageCentral products automate storage management in order to optimize storage efficiency. The products are capable of automating numerous tasks with regard to disk management. User-based and directory-based quotas may also be imposed with the help of the products. Additionally, the products are capable of generating custom reports illustrating disk usage and activity. The report generation utilizes ActiveX objects provided with the product. A buffer overflow vulnerability exists in the VERITAS Storage Exec and StorageCentral DCOM Server components. The flaw is caused by insufficient checking of user supplied data. By enticing a target user to open a malicious web page, an attacker may exploit the vulnerability to remotely execute arbitrary code in the security context of the current logged on user. In case of an attack where code injection is not successful, the affected product will terminate. In case of an attack where code injection and execution is successful, the behavior of the system is dependent on the intended purpose of the injected code. Any code injected into the vulnerable component would execute in the security context of the currently logged on user.

In order for the protection to be activated, update your Security Gateway product to the latest IPS update. For information on how to update IPS, go to SBP-2006-05, click on Protection tab and select the version of your choice.

Security Gateway R80 / R77 / R75

  1. In the IPS tab, click Protections and find the VERITAS Storage Exec and StorageCentral DCOM Server Buffer Overflow protection using the Search tool and Edit the protection's settings.
  2. Install policy on all Security Gateways.
