Who is Vulnerable?
Vulnerability Description Apple QuickTime is a multimedia player that supports a wide range of media formats. The software supports parsing and displaying picture files as well as numerous video formats. QuickTime is capable of processing the Apple QuickTime movie file format, which is a proprietary format created by Apple Computer, Inc. A vulnerability exists in the way Apple QuickTime handles MOV media files. Specifically, the processing of crafted string values embedded in a MOV file is prone to a buffer overflow. This vulnerability may result in arbitrary code being injected and executed on the target host. In case of a an attack where code injection and execution is successful, the behavior of the target is dependent on the intended purpose of the injected code. Any code executed by the attacker would run with the privileges of the logged in user. In case of a an attack where code injection is unsuccessful, the vulnerable application may terminate as a result of the attack attempt.

Protection Overview

This protection will detect and block attempts to exploit this vulnerability.

In order for the protection to be activated, update your Security Gateway product to the latest IPS update. For information on how to update IPS, go to SBP-2006-05, click on Protection tab and select the version of your choice.

Security Gateway R80 / R77 / R75

  1. In the IPS tab, click Protections and find the Apple QuickTime MOV File String Handling Integer Overflow protection using the Search tool and Edit the protection's settings.
  2. Install policy on all Security Gateways.

This protection's log will contain the following information:
