Who is Vulnerable?
Vulnerability Description The Panda Antivirus Library is used in Panda Antivirus products, including client, server and gateway product lines. The library is capable of scanning files inside archives. It supports numerous archive formats, one of which is the ZOO archive format. There exists a heap-based buffer overflow in Panda Antivirus. The flaw is caused by a boundary error when scanning a user supplied ZOO archive. Exploiting this vulnerability may cause a denial of service condition, or reportedly may result in arbitrary code execution. Any code executed as a result of exploitation will be executed with the privileges of the target application, system by default. In a simple attack case aimed at creating a denial of service condition, the affected AntiVirus service will terminate. Thus the functionality of the AV software will be stopped. The service will not resume until it is restarted manually. In a more sophisticated attack scenario, where the malicious user is successful in injecting and executing supplied code, the behavior of the system is dependent on the intended purpose of the injected code. Any code injected into the vulnerable component would execute in the security context of the AntiVirus service, normally System.

In order for the protection to be activated, update your Security Gateway product to the latest IPS update. For information on how to update IPS, go to SBP-2006-05, click on Protection tab and select the version of your choice.

Security Gateway R80 / R77 / R75

  1. In the IPS tab, click Protections and find the Panda Antivirus ZOO Archive Decompression Buffer Overflow protection using the Search tool and Edit the protection's settings.
  2. Install policy on all Security Gateways.
