Who is Vulnerable?
Vulnerability Description VMware produces software which emulates PC hardware which is used for virtual computing, storage and networking systems. VMware products provide virtual machines which are containers that simulate working environments. The products are usually used to deliver hosting services as well as testing environments. A heap buffer overflow vulnerability exists in a number of VMware products. The flaw is triggered when the VMware NAT service processes certain malformed FTP commands. A remote attacker may leverage this vulnerability to inject and execute arbitrary code on the VMware host system. In a successful attack, arbitrary code is injected and executed on the vulnerable target host. The behavior of the target system is dependent on the intention of the malicious code. Note that any code executed by the attacker will run with the privileges of the VMware NAT service, which is System on Windows. In an attack where code execution is unsuccessfull, the VMware NAT service may terminate. All guest systems that are relying on the NAT service for networking may experience lost of network connection until the NAT service is restarted.
