Who is Vulnerable?
Vulnerability Description The Microsoft Distributed Transaction Coordinator (MSDTC) is a transaction infrastructure for distributed systems. It is implemented on the Windows platform as a service. The MSDTC facilitates the interactions between independent programs in a distributed system. A denial of service vulnerability exists in the DTC (Distributed Transaction Coordinator) component of Microsoft Windows. The flaw is caused by insufficient verification of user supplied data. The successful exploitation of the vulnerability may allow an attacker to cause the affected system to stop accepting requests. In the case of a successful attack, the affected service will terminate. All existing transactions and connections will be aborted and services that depend on the vulnerable service may be affected as well. The affected service is not restarted automatically, and must be started manually to resume functionality.

This protection will detect and block attempts to exploit this vulnerability.

In order for the protection to be activated, update your Security Gateway product to the latest IPS update. For information on how to update IPS, go to SBP-2006-05, click on Protection tab and select the version of your choice.

Security Gateway R80 / R77 / R75

  1. In the IPS tab, click Protections and find the Microsoft Windows MSDTC Denial of Service protection using the Search tool and Edit the protection's settings.
  2. Install policy on all Security Gateways.

This protection's log will contain the following information:

Attack Name:  MS-RPC Enforcement Violation.
Attack Information:  Microsoft Windows MSDTC denial of service
