Who is Vulnerable? | |
Vulnerability Description | IBM Corporation is a large and well-known vendor of mainframe hardware, software, enterprise applications and servers, as well as desktop and workstation machines. As the vendor provides a broad level of support for its desktop computers, it includes an application designed to assist the user in communicating with IBM's support department. This application, named Access Support, provides a way for the user to check for messages relating to software updates, as well as receive personalized support from the vendor's Customer Support department. There exists a vulnerability in the eGatherer ActiveX control, which is included with the IBM Access Support application. The vulnerability is a result of an insufficient verification of user input to a certain function, which results in a stack buffer overflow. An attacker can exploit this vulnerability by enticing a user to visit a crafted web page, consequently injecting and executing code that will run with the privileges of the currently logged-in user. In case of an attack where code injection is not successful, the application that embeds the affected ActiveX object, such as Internet Explorer, will be terminated abnormally. In case of an attack where code injection and execution is successful, the behavior of the system is dependent on the intended purpose of the injected code. Any code injected into the vulnerable component would execute in the security context of the currently logged in user. |
This protection will detect and block attempts to exploit this vulnerability.
