Who is Vulnerable? | |
Vulnerability Description | Microsoft Internet Explorer (IE) is the most widely used web browser application. The browser supports various languages as well as most of the known character sets. Character sets define the character encoding used in an HTML page. Languages that have more characters than the ASCII set defines need a multi byte character set to be able to encode all the characters in order to be displayed by the browser. There exists a heap buffer overflow vulnerability in Microsoft Internet Explorer. The flaw is caused by an improper decoding of UTF-8 encoded HTML files. An attacker can exploit this vulnerability by enticing a user to open a crafted HTML file, resulting in possible injection and execution of arbitrary code on the target system with the privileges of the currently logged-in user. In case of an attack where code injection is not successful, the affected browser will terminate abnormally. In case of an attack where code injection and execution is successful, the behavior of the host system is dependent on the intended purpose of the injected code. It is likely that the vulnerable browser will stop functioning or terminate as a result. |
This protection will detect and block attempts to exploit this vulnerability.
