Who is Vulnerable?
Vulnerability Description Novell GroupWise Messenger is a corporate instant messaging solution targeted towards medium to large enterprise organizations. It facilitates secure communications and policy-based management through Novell's eDirectory product suite. The product is based on a client-server model where messaging clients connect to a central server to communicate after successful authentication is performed. An invalid pointer dereference flaw exists in the Novell GroupWise Messenger product. The flaw is due to an improper handling of crafted HTTP requests. A remote attacker may trigger this vulnerability to create a denial of service condition of the affected service. Upon processing of the malicious HTTP request, the affected service will terminate abnormally, dropping all existing connections and refusing further connections until restarted manually.

In order for the protection to be activated, update your Security Gateway product to the latest IPS update. For information on how to update IPS, go to SBP-2006-05, click on Protection tab and select the version of your choice.

Security Gateway R80 / R77 / R75

  1. In the IPS tab, click Protections and find the Novell GroupWise Messenger HTTP POST Request Invalid Memory Access protection using the Search tool and Edit the protection's settings.
  2. Install policy on all Security Gateways.
