Vulnerability Description Microsoft Internet Explorer (IE) is a web browser application that is capable of rendering both static and dynamic web content. The application is primarily used for tasks related to browsing the web, such as displaying HTML encoded pages, downloading files, etc. Extensions to the basic HTML standard allows ability to dynamically change the document structure at the client side, called DHTML. Normally, a client side scripting language is facilitated in order to allow the developers to control the document dynamically, changing it while being displayed. There exists a memory corruption vulnerability in Microsoft Internet Explorer. The vulnerability is due to an unspecified error while handling crafted JavaScript code that uses "onunload" event and "document.write". A remote attacker may leverage the vulnerability to cause denial of service. Internet Explorer will terminate abnormally when the malicious page is being unloaded, causing denial of service condition. This might either happen by following a link to another page, closing the browser window, or any other method that will cause the page to be unloaded.

Protection Overview

This protection will detect and block attempts to exploit this vulnerability.

In order for the protection to be activated, update your Security Gateway product to the latest IPS update. For information on how to update IPS, go to SBP-2006-05, click on Protection tab and select the version of your choice.

Security Gateway R80 / R77 / R75

  1. In the IPS tab, click Protections and find the Microsoft Internet Explorer onUnload event memory corruption protection using the Search tool and Edit the protection's settings.
  2. Install policy on all Security Gateways.

This protection's log will contain the following information:
