Who is Vulnerable? | |
Vulnerability Description | Computer Associates, or CA, develop and sell various software to enterprise users. Some CA products, such as Threat Manager, Protection Suites, and BrightStor ARCserve Backup, share a set of common components. One of these common component is Alert Notification Server. This component runs as a Windows service. There exists a buffer overflow vulnerability in the Alert Service component used by multiple CA products. The vulnerability is due to insufficient data validation in Alert Service component while handling specially crafted RPC requests. A remote authenticated attacker can exploit this vulnerability by sending a crafted RPC request to the target host. As a result of successful exploitation, the attacker can execute arbitrary code with SYSTEM privileges, or cause a denial of service condition. In case of an attack where code injection and execution is successful, the behavior of the target will depend on the intention of the attacker. Any code injected will be executed with System privileges on the targeted host. In case of an attack where code injection is unsuccessful, CA Alert Notification Server will be terminated. |
