Who is Vulnerable?
Vulnerability Description	Computer Associates ARCserve Backup for Laptops and Desktops provides backup and data recovery for remote, mobile, and desktop computers. In general, a backup system is comprised of a server and multiple clients, also known as agents. The server establishes, organizes, and controls all of the ARCserve Backup for Laptops and Desktops client user accounts. It also processes all data received from client downloads into individual client databases and archives. The server can restore user files and generate reports detailing installed hardware, software, and data files on each client with a valid user account on the server. There exists a buffer overflow vulnerability in the way CA ARCserve Backup for Laptops and Desktops service handles incoming messages. A remote unauthenticated attacker can send specially crafted message to the LGServer service to trigger the vulnerability, potentially execute arbitrary code on the target host with System privileges. In case of an attack where code injection is not successful, the affected service will terminate unexpectedly. This will create a denial of service condition of the affected service. In case of an attack where code injection and execution is successful, the behavior of the target is entirely dependent on the intended function of the injected code. The code in such a case would execute within the security context of the running process, normally System.

This protection will detect and block attempts to exploit this vulnerability.

In order for the protection to be activated, update your Security Gateway product to the latest IPS update. For information on how to update IPS, go to SBP-2006-05, click on Protection tab and select the version of your choice.

Security Gateway R80 / R77 / R75

In the IPS tab, click Protections and find the CA ARCserve Backup for Laptops and Desktops LGServer Code Execution protection using the Search tool and Edit the protection's settings.
Install policy on all Security Gateways.

This protection's log will contain the following information:
