Who is Vulnerable?
Vulnerability Description Apple iTunes is a multimedia player that supports a wide range of media formats. One of the file formats supported by Apple iTunes is the PLS file format. PLS is a computer file format that stores multimedia playlists. A buffer overflow vulnerability has been reported in Apple iTunes. The error is due to improper bounds checking when copying user supplied data into a buffer. A remote attacker can exploit this vulnerability by enticing a user to open a specially crafted .pls file. Successful exploitation of this vulnerability can lead to arbitrary code execution in the context of the user. An unsuccessful code execution attempt can lead to abnormal termination of the vulnerable program.

Protection Overview

This protection will detect and block attempts to exploit this vulnerability.

In order for the protection to be activated, update your Security Gateway product to the latest IPS update. For information on how to update IPS, go to SBP-2006-05, click on Protection tab and select the version of your choice.

Security Gateway R80 / R77 / R75

  1. In the IPS tab, click Protections and find the Apple iTunes PLS File Parsing Buffer Overflow protection using the Search tool and Edit the protection's settings.
  2. Install policy on all Security Gateways.

This protection's log will contain the following information:
