Vulnerability Description | VLC Media Player is an open source multimedia player maintained by VideoLAN.org. It can play many audio and video formats (MPEG, DivX, ogg, Wave etc.) as well as various streaming protocols. It is highly portable and available for multiple platforms. Support for various formats is implemented in the form of plugins bundled with the player as shared object or windows DLL files. A memory corruption vulnerability exists in VideoLAN VLC media player. The vulnerability is due to an invalid free error when processing SMB URIs. Remote attackers can exploit this vulnerability by enticing target users to open a maliciously crafted playlist file, such as a XSPF file, in a vulnerable version of VideoLAN VLC media player. In case of an attack where code injection and execution is successful, the behavior of the target host is entirely dependent on the intended function of the injected code. The injected code would execute within the security context of the currently logged in user. In case of an attack where code injection is unsuccessful, the affected application would terminate abnormally. |
