Vulnerability Description Microsoft Outlook is an e-mail application and a personal information manager. A remote code execution vulnerability has been reported in the way that Microsoft Office Outlook tries to verify attachments in a specially crafted e-mail message. The vulnerability is due to an error in Microsoft Office Outlook that fails to properly verify the file extension of an attachment in a specially crafted e-mail message. A remote attacker may exploit this issue by sending a specially crafted e-mail message containing an attachment to a user. When the user attempts to open the attachment, an attacker specified malicious executable file could be run.

Protection Overview

This protection will detect and block attempts to bypass the Outlook attachment filter.

In order for the protection to be activated, update your Security Gateway product to the latest IPS update. For information on how to update IPS, go to SBP-2006-05, click on Protection tab and select the version of your choice.

Security Gateway R80 / R77 / R75 / R71 / R70

  1. In the IPS tab, click Protections and find the Microsoft Outlook AttachMethods Remote Code Execution (MS10-045) protection using the Search tool and Edit the protection's settings.
  2. Install policy on all Security Gateways.
