Who is Vulnerable?
Vulnerability Description The Cinepak codec is a media encoder and decoder supported by the Windows Media Player. A remote code execution vulnerability has been reported in the way the Cinepak codec handles supported format files. The vulnerability is due to an error in the Cinepak codec that fails to properly handle specially crafted media files. A remote attacker could trigger this flaw by convincing a victim to open a specially crafted media file. Successful exploitation of this issue may allow execution of arbitrary code on a vulnerable system.

Protection Overview

This protection will detect and block the transferring of malformed .AVI files over HTTP.

In order for the protection to be activated, update your Security Gateway product to the latest IPS update. For information on how to update IPS, go to SBP-2006-05, click on Protection tab and select the version of your choice.

Security Gateway R80 / R77 / R75 / R71 / R70 / R65

  1. In the IPS tab, click Protections and find the Microsoft Windows Cinepak Codec Remote Code Execution (MS10-055) protection using the Search tool and Edit the protection's settings.
  2. Install policy on all Security Gateways.
