Who is Vulnerable?
Vulnerability Description OpenType is a font format developed jointly by Microsoft and Adobe as an extension of Apple's TrueType font format. A remote code execution vulnerability has been reported in the way Microsoft Windows OpenType Font (OTF) format driver improperly parses specially crafted OpenType fonts. A remote attacker can exploit this vulnerability via a specially crafted OTF file. Successful exploitation may allow execution of arbitrary code on a vulnerable system. The vulnerability is caused when the OpenType Font (OTF) format driver does not properly reset a pointer when freeing memory. This results in a "double free" condition. A remote attacker may exploit this issue via a specially crafted OTF file. Successful exploitation of this issue may allow the attacker to take complete control of an affected system.

Protection Overview

This protection will detect and block the transferring of malformed OTF files over HTTP.

In order for the protection to be activated, update your Security Gateway product to the latest IPS update. For information on how to update IPS, go to SBP-2006-05, click on Protection tab and select the version of your choice.

  1. In the IPS tab, click Protections and find the Microsoft OpenType Font Format Driver Double Free Code Execution (MS10-091) protection using the Search tool and Edit the protection's settings.
  2. Install policy on all Security Gateways.
