Who is Vulnerable?
Vulnerability Description QuickTime is a media player application developed by Apple. It is capable of playing back numerous multimedia file formats from local file system or network servers. Upon installation, Apple QuickTime also installs a web browser plugin, QTPlugin.ocx. A remote code execution vulnerability has been reported in Apple QuickTime ActiveX control QTPlugin.ocx. The vulnerability is due to an input validation error while parsing the value of the _Marshaled_pUnk parameter. A remote attacker may exploit this issue by enticing target users to visit a malicious web page. Successful exploitation would result in arbitrary code injection and execution with the privileges of the logged in user and may cause the application to terminate abnormally.

Protection Overview

This protection will detect and block attempts to exploit this vulnerability.

In order for the protection to be activated, update your Security Gateway product to the latest IPS update. For information on how to update IPS, go to SBP-2006-05, click on Protection tab and select the version of your choice.

Security Gateway R80 / R77 / R75

  1. In the IPS tab, click Protections and find the Apple QuickTime QTPlugin.ocx _Marshaled_pUnk Code Execution protection using the Search tool and Edit the protection's settings.
  2. Install policy on all Security Gateways.

This protection's log will contain the following information:

Attack Name:  Web Client Enforcement Violation.
Attack Information:  Apple QuickTime QTPlugin.ocx _Marshaled_pUnk code execution
