Who is Vulnerable?
Vulnerability Description HP OpenView product consists of a suite of network and system management software applications developed by HP. It includes several optional modules and components, such as OpenView Quality Manager, OpenView Performance Insight, and OpenView Network Node Manager. A stack buffer overflow vulnerability exists in HP OpenView Network Node Manager (NNM). The vulnerability is due to a boundary error in snmpviewer.exe CGI program when processing certain parameters sent in a crafted HTTP request. A remote attacker can exploit this issue by sending a crafted HTTP POST request to a target server, potentially causing arbitrary code to be injected and executed in the security context of the web server process.

Protection Overview

This protection detects and blocks specially crafted HTTP POST requests sent to the vulnerable server.

In order for the protection to be activated, update your Security Gateway product to the latest IPS update. For information on how to update IPS, go to SBP-2006-05, click on Protection tab and select the version of your choice.

Security Gateway R80 / R77 / R75

  1. In the IPS tab, click Protections and find the HP OpenView NNM snmpviewer.exe CGI Stack Buffer Overflow protection using the Search tool and Edit the protection's settings.
  2. Install policy on all Security Gateways.
