Who is Vulnerable?
Vulnerability Description MailEnable is a mail server application designed to run on the Microsoft Windows platform. MailEnable bundles a server component that supports the HTTPMail protocol. This protocol allows an email client, such as Outlook Express, to view, send, and manage electronic messages. The HTTPMail protocol is essentially a standard WebDAV (Web Distributed Authoring and Versioning) service. There exists a buffer overflow vulnerability in the way MailEnable processes the HTTPMail protocol. This issue is caused by insufficient boundary checking when data is copied into a fixed size buffer. This vulnerability can be exploited to execute arbitrary code on the target system with privileges of the HTTPMail service process. In a simple attack case aimed at creating a denial of service condition, the affected service will terminate. If the service is not configured to restart automatically, then the MailEnable HTTPMail functionality will be unavailable until the server is restarted manually. In a more sophisticated attack scenario, where the malicious user is successful in injecting and executing supplied code, the behaviour of the system is dependent on the nature the injected code. Any code injected into the vulnerable component would execute in the security context of the service process, normally System level.
