Who is Vulnerable?
Vulnerability Description Microsoft Internet Explorer (IE) is a web browser application that is capable of rendering both static and dynamic web content. A remote code execution vulnerability has been reported in the way that Microsoft Internet Explorer 8 handles the loading of DLL files. The vulnerability is due to the way Internet Explorer handles the loading of IESHIMS.DLL. A remote attacker can exploit this issue by enticing a target user to save a maliciously crafted dynamic link library (DLL) file on the desktop or modify the system variable PATH. Upon starting the Internet Explorer 8, the malicious DLL will be loaded and executed. Successful exploitation of this vulnerability could allow the attacker to take complete control of an affected system.

Protection Overview

This protection will detect and block the transferring of suspicious DLL files over CIFS and Webdav.

In order for the protection to be activated, update your Security Gateway product to the latest IPS update. For information on how to update IPS, go to SBP-2006-05, click on Protection tab and select the version of your choice.

Security Gateway R80 / R77 / R75 / R71 / R70 / R65

  1. In the IPS tab, click Protections and find the Microsoft Internet Explorer 8 IESHIMS.DLL Insecure Library Loading (MS11-003) protection using the Search tool and Edit the protection's settings.
  2. Install policy on all Security Gateways.

This protection's log will contain the following information:
