Who is Vulnerable?
Vulnerability Description Adobe Reader and Acrobat is a family of computer programs developed by Adobe Systems, designed to view, create, manipulate and manage files in Adobe's core technology, the Portable Document Format (PDF). PDF files can contain JPEG 2000 images that are displayed when the files are opened in Adobe Reader. A memory corruption vulnerability has been reported in Adobe Reader and Acrobat. The vulnerability is due to an error in the Adobe Reader when handling PDF files that contain embedded JPEG 2000 images. A remote attacker could trigger these flaws via a specially crafted PDF file. Successful exploitation will create a denial of service condition, causing the application to crash, and may allow execution of arbitrary code once a malicious PDF file is loaded on a vulnerable system.

Protection Overview

This protection will detect and block the transferring of malformed PDF files over HTTP.

In order for the protection to be activated, update your Security Gateway product to the latest IPS update. For information on how to update IPS, go to SBP-2006-05, click on Protection tab and select the version of your choice.

Security Gateway R80 / R77 / R75 / R71 / R70

  1. In the IPS tab, click Protections and find the Adobe Reader JPEG 2000 Embedded in PDF File Memory Corruption (APSB11-03) protection using the Search tool and Edit the protection's settings.
  2. Install policy on all Security Gateways.

This protection's log will contain the following information:
