Who is Vulnerable?
Vulnerability Description Microsoft Collaboration Data Objects (CDO) are a set of COM objects made for the IIS SMTP service and Exchange servers that provide the ability to build messaging and collaboration applications. A buffer overflow vulnerability exists in Microsoft Collaboration Data Objects. The vulnerability is caused by insufficient verification of an overly long header name. A remote attacker could trigger this flaw just by sending the victim a malicious SMTP message. Successful exploitation of this vulnerability could create a denial of service.

Protection Overview

This protection will detect and block malicious SMTP messages.

In order for the protection to be activated, update your Security Gateway product to the latest IPS update. For information on how to update IPS, go to SBP-2006-05, click on Protection tab and select the version of your choice.

Security Gateway R80 / R77 / R75

  1. In the IPS tab, click Protections and find the Microsoft Collaboration Data Objects Buffer Overflow (MS05-048) protection using the Search tool and Edit the protection's settings.
  2. Install policy on all Security Gateways.

This protection's log will contain the following information:

Attack Name:  SMTP Protection Violation.
