Who is Vulnerable?
Vulnerability Description AOL Desktop is an Internet application suite that integrates a web browser, media player, instant messenger client and document editing. RTX (Rich Text Document) is a proprietary document format used by AOL for document creation and editing. A remote attacker could exploit this issue via a malformed RTX file. A buffer overflow vulnerability has been discovered in AOL Desktop software. The vulnerability is due to a boundary error in the AOL Desktop software while parsing a specially crafted RTX file. A remote attacker could exploit this issue by enticing target users to open the crafted file with a vulnerable version of the AOL Desktop. Successful exploitation of this vulnerability could allow execution of arbitrary code on an affected system.

Protection Overview

This protection will detect and block the transferring of malformed RTX files over HTTP.

In order for the protection to be activated, update your Security Gateway product to the latest IPS update. For information on how to update IPS, go to SBP-2006-05, click on Protection tab and select the version of your choice.

Security Gateway R81 / R80 / R77 / R75

  1. In the IPS tab, click Protections and find the AOL Desktop .RTX File Parsing Buffer Overflow protection using the Search tool and Edit the protection's settings.
  2. Install policy on all Security Gateways.

This protection's log will contain the following information:
