Who is Vulnerable?
Vulnerability Description An elevation of privilege vulnerability has been reported in Microsoft Visual Studio. The vulnerability is due to an error in the way Visual Studio loads Add-ins from insecure file locations. An attacker may exploit this issue by placing a specially crafted Add-In and DLL file in the path used by Visual Studio. Successful exploitation could allow an attacker to run arbitrary code with elevated privileges.

Protection Overview

This protection will detect and block attempts to transfer specially crafted DLL and Add-in files over SMB.

In order for the protection to be activated, update your Security Gateway product to the latest IPS update. For information on how to update IPS, go to SBP-2006-05, click on Protection tab and select the version of your choice.

Security Gateway R80 / R77 / R75 / R71 / R70

  1. In the IPS tab, click Protections and find the Microsoft Visual Studio Add-In Insecure Library Loading (MS12-021) protection using the Search tool and Edit the protection's settings.
  2. Install policy on all Security Gateways.

This protection's log will contain the following information:
