Who is Vulnerable? | |
Vulnerability Description | The Microsoft Office is a popular application suite that consists of several independent applications such as Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft PowerPoint, and others. The suite ships with a set of image processing helper libraries known as graphics filters. The graphics filters are used by various Windows programs to open image files, or save data as image files, but they are not used by the Office programs themselves. The filters are included as part of the suite in order to standardize image handling on systems which include older applications or applications which rely on the standard Windows filters to process images. The image formats supported by Office graphics filters include BMP, GIF, JPEG, PNG, and others. There exists a buffer overflow vulnerability in the GIF graphics filter installed with Microsoft Office products. The flaw is triggered when a malicious GIF image is parsed by the affected component. A successful attack may lead to the execution of arbitrary code with the privileges of the currently logged in user. In an attack case where code injection is not successful, the application processing the malicious GIF file will terminate or stop responding. In a more sophisticated attack, where code injection is successful, the behavior of the target is entirely dependent on the intended function of the injected code. The code in such a case would execute within the security context of the current user. |
