Who is Vulnerable?
Vulnerability Description The Shell organizes objects necessary for running applications into a hierarchical namespace and provides users and applications with a consistent and efficient way to access and manage objects. A code execution vulnerability has been reported in Windows Shell. The vulnerability is due to an error in the Windows Shell that fails to properly validate specific parameters when attempting to load the icon of a shortcut. A remote attacker may exploit this vulnerability via a malicious shortcut file, and an associated malicious binary. When an application parses the icon of the shortcut, the malicious binary will execute the attacker's code on the victim system.

In order for the protection to be activated, update your Security Gateway product to the latest IPS update. For information on how to update IPS, go to SBP-2006-05, click on Protection tab and select the version of your choice.

Security Gateway R80 / R77 / R75

  1. In the IPS tab, click Protections and find the Microsoft Windows Shell LNK File Parsing Code Execution (MS10-046) - Ver2 protection using the Search tool and Edit the protection's settings.
  2. Install policy on all Security Gateways.
