Who is Vulnerable?
Vulnerability Description Rich Text Format (RTF) provides a format for text and graphics interchange that can be used with different operating systems. OLE is the technology that applications use to create and edit compound documents. By using OLE technology, an application can provide embedding and linking support. A remote code execution vulnerability has been identified in Microsoft Word.The vulnerability is due to a memory calculation error in Microsoft Word that fails to properly handle specially crafted control words in Rich Text Format (.rtf) files.A remote attacker could trigger this flaw by convincing a victim to open a specially crafted RTF file in Word. Successful exploitation of this vulnerability may allow execution of arbitrary code on a target system.

In order for the protection to be activated, update your Security Gateway product to the latest IPS update. For information on how to update IPS, go to SBP-2006-05, click on Protection tab and select the version of your choice.

Security Gateway R80 / R77 / R75

  1. In the IPS tab, click Protections and find the Microsoft Word RTF Object Parsing Memory Corruption (MS08-072) - Ver2 protection using the Search tool and Edit the protection's settings.
  2. Install policy on all Security Gateways.
