Who is Vulnerable?
Vulnerability Description A vulnerability exists in the way Microsoft Help and Support Center (HSC) validates URLs with the scheme hcp://. There is a vulnerability in the way the Microsoft Help and Support Center processes URL strings. The vulnerability could be exploited to download and execute malicious programs on a vulnerable system. Upon exploiting this vulnerability, Windows Help and Support Center will unexpectedly start, displaying the DVD upgrade interface. If a user clicks the "Upgrade Now" button, the victim's computer will load the malicious resource. If the malicious resource is an executable, Help and Support center will prompt the user to open the file from the remote location, or save the file to disk. If the malicious resource is an HTML file, Help and Support Center will render the content and execute any embedded scripting. The behaviour of the victim's computer after this point is entirely dependent on the malicious code that is being executed.
