Who is Vulnerable?
Vulnerability Description Windows Address Book (WAB) is a component of Microsoft Windows operating systems that lets users keep a single list of contacts that can be shared by multiple programs. It is most commonly used by Microsoft Outlook Express. The vulnerability is due to a buffer overflow error in the Windows Address Book (WAB) functions within Outlook Express. An attacker can exploit this vulnerability via a specially crafted '.wab' file. Successful exploitation could allow execution of arbitrary code once the malformed '.wab' file is loaded. There are cases in which certain traffic, although not intended for malicious use, is very unsafe, since it may transfer shellcode which is undetectable by IPS.

Protection Overview

This protection will block the transferring of .WAB files over HTTP.The detect mode makes it possible to track unauthorized traffic without blocking it.Depending on the traffic mix, activating this protection may result in performance degradation.

In order for the protection to be activated, update your Security Gateway product to the latest IPS update. For information on how to update IPS, go to SBP-2006-05, click on Protection tab and select the version of your choice.

  1. In the IPS tab, click Protections and find the WAB Files protection using the Search tool and Edit the protection's settings.
  2. Install policy on all Security Gateways.

This protection's log will contain the following information:

Attack Name:  Content Protection Violation.
Attack Information:  WAB file
