Vulnerability Description | Advanced Streaming Format (ASF) is a proprietary streaming format developed by Microsoft that defines the structure of complex, synchronized object data streams and provides streaming media services for the Windows Media framework. It is used for multimedia data including audio, video, still images, scripts, ActiveX controls, HTML documents, and other data types. It is part of Netshow, a proprietary streaming media solution from Microsoft. A remote code execution vulnerability exists in Windows Media Player due to the way it handles ASF files. An attacker can create a specially crafted ASF file that will cause various applications that host Windows Media Player libraries to attempt to call an invalid memory address on the heap. This could lead to code execution in the context of the currently logged on user. |
This protection will block malformed ASF files on all services with Protocol Type "HTTP".The detect mode makes it possible to track unauthorized traffic without blocking it.
In order for the protection to be activated, update your Security Gateway product to the latest IPS update. For information on how to update IPS, go to SBP-2006-05, click on Protection tab and select the version of your choice.
