Who is Vulnerable?
Vulnerability Description Multiple vulnerabilities have been reported in Symantec SupportSoft ActiveX controls. SupportSoft provides third party ActiveX controls used for remote assistance and other technical support functions. A remote attacker could cause the browser to crash allowing execution of arbitrary commands.The vulnerabilities are due to multiple buffer overflow errors in Symantec SupportSoft ActiveX controls. SupportSoft fails to properly handle malformed arguments passed to certain methods. To trigger this flaw, an attacker can specially craft a malicious Web page that initiates a vulnerable ActiveX control with a malformed argument. Successful exploitation could result in remote code execution on the target system once the malicious page is loaded.

Protection Overview

This protection will detect and block the vulnerable ActiveX Control.

In order for the protection to be activated, update your Security Gateway product to the latest IPS update. For information on how to update IPS, go to SBP-2006-05, click on Protection tab and select the version of your choice.

Security Gateway R80 / R77 / R75 / R71 / R70 / R65

  1. In the IPS tab, click Protections and find the Symantec Products SupportSoft ActiveX Control Multiple Buffer Overflows protection using the Search tool and Edit the protection's settings.
  2. Install policy on all Security Gateways.

This protection's log will contain the following information:

Attack Name:  Web Client Enforcement Violation.
