Who is Vulnerable?
Vulnerability Description RSync is an open source utility that provides fast incremental file transfer. A vulnerability exists in the way rsync handles remote client supplied paths. It is possible for a remote attacker to overwrite, create or delete arbitrary files on a remote rsync server. In case of a successful attack, a file on the target file system will be created, or overwritten. The number and type of files that can be affected depend on the privileges under which the rsync server is running. Further effects on the system are dependent on the file that was overwritten.

Protection Overview

This protection will detect and block attempts to exploit this vulnerability.

In order for the protection to be activated, update your Security Gateway product to the latest IPS update. For information on how to update IPS, go to SBP-2006-05, click on Protection tab and select the version of your choice.

Security Gateway R80 / R77 / R75

  1. In the IPS tab, click Protections and find the RSync Arbitrary File Overwrite protection using the Search tool and Edit the protection's settings.
  2. Install policy on all Security Gateways.

This protection's log will contain the following information:

Attack Name:  RDP Enforcement Violation.
Attack Information:  RSync arbitrary file overwrite
