Who is Vulnerable?
Vulnerability Description WhatsUp is a network management and monitoring application developed by Ipswitch Inc. It has a built-in web server to enable remote access to the application. A vulnerability exists in the way the web server component of Ipswitch WhatsUp Gold processes a request that contains a special device name. An unhandled exception occurs when an HTTP request containing a reserved DOS device name is processed. An attacker exploiting this vulnerability can cause the web server component to terminate, causing a denial of service.

In order for the protection to be activated, update your Security Gateway product to the latest IPS update. For information on how to update IPS, go to SBP-2006-05, click on Protection tab and select the version of your choice.

Security Gateway R80 / R77 / R75

  1. In the IPS tab, click Protections and find the Ipswitch WhatsUp Gold DOS Device HTTP Request Denial of Service protection using the Search tool and Edit the protection's settings.
  2. Install policy on all Security Gateways.

This protection's log will contain the following information:

Attack Name:  Application Servers Protection Violation.
